Welcome to the new ipVA blog

by JS Hatcher on 1 September 2008

This is just an introductory post to the new ipVA blog, Tangible IP, from me your blogger-in-residence, Jordan Hatcher.  I’ve just started at ipVA at the first of July, and am in charge of this blog and the new ipVA web presence (as well as a whole host of other things).  I’m really excited about starting this blog, as it is kind of a dream job for me — blogging regularly on intellectual property as part of my job description.

The Tangible IP site will grow organically, but we hope to start covering:

  • events on IP happening in the UK and in Europe, including some liveblogging at the ones I can attend;
  • trends in IP in Europe, especially on the VC and private equity front;
  • IP strategy, which is an area that is growing quite a bit in Europe as a specific area of practice (which of course ipVA does as part of its business). I personally have a more academic background than a commercial one, so I hope to post about this area as I learn about it;
  • experiment with some podcasts in October or November (another learning experience for yours truly);
  • maybe even some video this winter;
  • regular interviews and guest posts;
  • and of course all things IP that look interesting!

Overall, Tangible IP will keep a practical focus on intellectual property and its impact for people and businesses who use IP as a tool to accomplish a specific goal.  Though patents will be an area of particular importance, we will actually stick to a whole range of intangibles in terms of coverage. This will include the more formal IPRs such as copyright, trade mark, designs, database rights, trade secrets (and of course patents). But I’m also really interested in looking at how broader areas of business intangibles such as the people who work for a business and its “innovation culture” tie in with the more formal IP rights and how to address all of these areas with a practical hat on.

Thanks and welcome to the new site.  Please subscribe to our feed, send us an email, or leave a comment below.
